Wikipedia defines Singing as an act of producing musical sounds with the voice, and augments regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm. I listen to all genre’s of music and my top 10 male singers list is not only based on studio singing, but also live performances. There are more than 10 singers that are brilliant, but I cannot fit all of them. So my apologies if I left any of your favorite ones, but I am sure most of you will agree to my list of the Top 10 Male Singers.
10 Bob Marley
You do not have to scream or hit those extra high notes to be a great singer. Bob Marley had one of the best soothing dragging tones you will ever hear. Here is Bob Marley Live in Santa Barbara . Enjoy watching it.
09 Engelbert Humperdinck
Engelbert who you say? Engelbert Humperdinck is a British Pop singer who was born in Madras, British India. If you are fan of either Tom Jones, Andy Williams or Al Martino, then you would definitely like Engelbert Humperdinck. He is the surprise on no. 09 in this top 10 Male Singers list.
Here Engelbert Humperdinck performing one of my favorites Please Release Me.
08 Louis Armstrong
Whenever I listen to Louis Armstrong, I always have a smile on my face for some reason. The Louisiana born singer also plays the trumpet and cornet. He definitely has a wonderful voice.
One of the most influential singer of all time, it gives me great pleasure in introducing Sting at No. 7 in this top 10 male singers of all time. You definitely might have heard “Every breath you take” when he was in The Police. Sting’s first solo album was called The Dream of the Blue Turtles and was released in the United States on 1st of June 1985. He is an amazing singer and an even better songwriter. He is one of the few singer who can actually throw his voice. Few (out of many) of my favorite songs are Englishman in New York, Seven Days, Fields of gold and Desert rose etc etc . Let me link my best track, which is slightly underrated. Its called It’s Probably Me featuring Eric Clapton for the Lethal Weapon 3 movie soundtrack.
06 Stevie Wonder
This singer plays the following instruments keyboards, harmonica, drums, bass guitar, congas, bongos, keytar, accordion, harpejji and I am sure there is more to come. On no.6 on my Top 10 Male Singers of all time, I present you Stevland Hardaway Judkins known by his stage name Stevie Wonder. I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Stevie Wonder live in concert in Central Park for the Global Citizen Festival (which is a joke festival if you ask me). The first time I actually heard Stevie Wonder is when my aunt used to play the song “I just call to say I love you”. As a cover band, it is near to impossible to get the chords right for any Stevie Wonder song, because he never uses the usual common chords that other common composers use.
05 Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey (which is just 8 miles from where I live). If you ever visit Jersey, you have to go to the Frank Sinatra park. It’s a beautiful park with a view of the Manhattan skyline. The first time I actually heard Frank Sinatra is when I was 12 I think when I was watching “Little ‘Tinker” by Tex Avery cartoon in which a skunk tries to sing Frank Sinatra to lure females.
Here it is:
If you ever plan to visit New York City, you will hear his song New York, New York at least once during your visit. The song York, New York is a theme song from the 1977 Martin Scorsese film New York, New York and it is composed by John Kander. Let me leave you with that song.
04 Chris Cornell
If you ask me to describe Chris Cornell’s vocals in one word it would be “Power” . He is the best grunge singer of all time and he makes it to no.4 on my Top 10 Male Singers list. I have heard every album and every song that Soundgarden has come up with. I am a huge fan of Rage Against the machine and I when I heard that RATM will be teaming up with Chris Cornell, I was super excited about it. My favorite Audioslave song would be “Show me how to live”
03 Robert Plant
This singer sings for the best rock band in the world. Ladies and gentlemen presenting Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin on no. 3 in this top 10 male singers of all time. If Robert Plant is not present in any top 10 list, then its not a real top ten list. I have not seen Led Zeppelin live in concert, but I would really like to see them before I perish from this earth. Plant was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, UK . This is the same town where K.K. Downing, the guitarist of Judas Priest is from. This is the depressing part, In 2008, Rolling Stone editors had placed Robert Plant on 15th , yes can you believe it 15th position? I really don’t know who the hell are these people who decide. Anyways, Let me leave you with one of the best live performances I have ever seen and the best song in the world “Stairway to heaven”. The video is from the concert film “The Song Remains the Same” and it took place in Madison Square Garden, New York City.
02 Michael Jackson
With an estimated sale of over 400 million records worldwide, I present you the “King of Pop” at no.2, Michael Jackson. The Indiana born singer has bagged 13 Grammy’s which is a less number considering Kanye West has won 21 Grammys. How in the f***ing world, Kanye West has won more Grammy’s than Michael Jackson? You should be ashamed of yourself Grammys. Having said that Michael has the honor along with Carlos Santana to have won the most Grammy Awards won in one night (1984).
Let me leave you with my favorite Michael Jackson song, Who is it?
01 Freddie Mercury
If there is any singer who would nail that note to perfection while singing live, there could be only one singer who would do that in every live show. If there is one entertainer who would give his best in a live performance, it would be none other that Freddie Mercury from the band Queen. He is not only a brilliant live performer, but also a fantastic song writer. Any writer who wrote Bohemian Rhapsody and sang it to perfection deserves to be at least in the top 3 of any top 10 singers list.
Be it live, studio or composing, Freddie Mercury is the best in all three aspects. Let me leave you guys with one of my favorite songs from Freddie Mercury’s solo albums, this ones called “Living on my own”
