I grew up listening to pop music, until some one handed me the Nirvana Nevermind a and the rest they say is history. I got in to grunge music and bought almost every album (cassette to be more precise) that I could get my hands on. The lyrics are very dark, especially Alice in Chains. Many of you might have different opinion on your top 10 grunge bands, but this is mine top 10 Grunge bands.
Mudhoney, a band from Seattle Washington were one of the major early contributors to the grunge revolution.
If you are a grunge fan and haven’t heard this band, you are seriously missing out on some good music. Silverchair is a grunge band from Austrailia and once was even termed to be the next Nirvana. These lads were really young when they got popular and they got signed by Sony Music. My favorite song is Emotion Sickness from the album Neon Ballroom.
08 Screaming Trees
I seen Bush live in concert in Madison Square Garden when they played along with Seether and Nickelback (yikes) and they looked and sounded incomplete without Nigel Pulsford . The current guitarist Chris Traynor is good, but for some reason he does not fit into the band. My favorite Bush song would probably be The Chemicals Between Us from the The Science of Things album
05 Stone Temple Pilots
If you do not believe in miracles, then I don’t think you have heard of Scott Weiland . Stone Temple Pilots had a unique sound with the guitar riff and tone of Dean DeLeo, with the vocals of Scott Weiland, the drumming of Eric Kretz and the simple bass playing by Robert DeLeo. I seen Stone Temple Pilots in Boston when they played with Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) and I think the band should be under some other band name, just like what RATM did with Audioslave. Chester Bennington was awesome on the vocals no doubt about that, but we all know STP with Scott Weiland leading.
If I would do a list of top 10 rock singers, Chris Cornell would be in my top 3 list for sure. I still remember, I was memorized when I seen the video Black Hole Sun for the first time on MTV (Yes MTV. The “M” really stood for Music at that point of time). I made a trip to Seattle just to see the Black sun sculpture located in Volunteer Park and to visit few other former grunge live bars. Soundgarden had to make it in my top four at least.
03 Alice in Chains
“Down in a hole and I don’t know if I can be saved . See my heart I decorate it like a grave.” These lyrics are from the song Down in a hole from their 1992 album Dirt. This song was written by Jerry Cantrell and my favorite Alice in Chains songs.
02 Pearl Jam
Pearl jam is the only big band that I haven’t seen live, because their tickets get sold out within minutes and then re-sold to the public for the price which I can buy a diamond ring for my girlfriend. They say every band has that “one” album and for me that Pearl jam album is Ten. I could still listen to the song Jeremy and still not get bored listening to it.
Ladies and gentlemen, the number one “Grunge Band” of all time goes to Nirvana. I know there are many Nirvana haters out here and say that they were over-rated, but hey, Nirvana was the band that actually brought GRUNGE to mainstream. My favorite Nirvana song would be Heart-Shaped Box, cause I feel this song is about Courtney Love (whom I still hold responsible for his death) 🙁
.. and that concludes my Top 10 Grunge Bands Of All Time
